@U.S. Beaches Have Unsafe Levels of Fecal Bacteria TPBR NEWS
Could going to the beach be making you sick? A new study from the Environment America Research and Policy Center has discovered that more than half the beaches in the United States have had potentially unsafe levels of fecal bacteria at some point in 2018. Researchers analyzed data from the National Water Quality Monitoring Council pertaining to 2,620 beaches, spanning 29 states and Puerto Rico, and found that 58 percent of the total contained amounts of fecal bacteria that surpassed the Environmental Protection Agency’s “beach action value” threshold. A worrisome 13 percent (or 605) of the sites were found to have potentially dangerous levels on more than a quarter of the days when samples of the water were collected and tested. The BAV threshold represents the poop bacteria levels at which approximately 32 out of every 1,000 swimmers would get sick. This varies depending on the type of poop bacteria. Of course, swimming in water that exceeds these thresholds doesn’t necessarily mean that you will get sick but the odds of getting sick increase with increasing amounts of bacteria. Another study published in the journal Environmental Health in 2018 found that around 90 million water recreation-related illnesses occur in the U.S. each year, costing $2.2 to $3.7 billion annually. Illnesses include diarrhea and other gastrointestinal disorders, stomach flu, pink eye and skin rashes. The House Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure is considering bipartisan legislation to boost funding for the Clean Water State Revolving Fund, a federal program that gives assistance to states for water infrastructure projects.
