Specifically the Indonesian rainforests, which are the main target of deforestation to make way for more plantations for palm. Norway has until 2020 to eliminate the use of palm oil. According to Rainforest Rescue, a non profit organization, Last year Europe used 7.7 million tons (61%) of palm oil for the use of energy, that being, biofuel, power and heat. The remaining 39% was used for “food, animal feed and chemical products.” Palm oil will still be allowed in food and cosmetics, but in the meantime, the European Union is “working towards a 2030 deadline that will phase out other palm oil products”. Norway’s actions to ban Palm oil will hopefully spark the change needed. Norway should be seen as a role model and an example for all other countries in understanding the severity of this issue and the need to take action now. The destruction of the Southeast Asian rainforests has released an ample amount of carbon into the atmosphere causing major consequences not only for animals but humans as well. Additionally, the destruction of rainforests is the destruction of many different species homes. Orangutans, Borneo elephants and Sumatran tigers are just a few of the many animals on the brink of extinction.
