Ripe's video: Two Young Girls Petition For The End Of Plastic In Happy Meals

@Two Young Girls Petition For The End Of Plastic In Happy Meals
Ella and Caitlin McEwan are petitioning for McDonald's and Burger King to end their production of plastic toys from the happy meals... After learning about plastic pollution in school became very intrigued in how they could make a change. They both enjoy going out to eat at both establishments but found that when they got their happy meal toys, it entertained them for a few minutes before it got thrown away. The goal of their petition is to not diminish the production of happy meal toys, but rather find a sustainable alternative to “protect the planet for us and for future generations”. They want to spread awareness of the seriousness at hand. Especially spreading the idea to these fast-food chains to “think of the environment”. This online petition “has amassed more than 168,000 signatures, more than three quarters of the 200,000-signature target”. Ella and Caitlin have appeared on the BBC One program in hopes to gain more signatures. Burger King has responded to this campaign, explaining that the message is heard and they hope to be making “some changes in the future”. McDonald’s has also announced that they are making an effort to remove plastic lids on McFlurries and single-use plastic from the salad bowls in the UK. Although not a massive change to the problem at hand, it is a step towards a more sustainable future. 1979 was the first year that Happy meals was launched, and maybe 2020 will be the last year that plastic toys are produced for them. The future is in the youth's hands, and these two children, Ella and Caitlin, are shining a positive light of change to come.
