Thoughts on my Salton Sea road trip: Salton Sea is one of the strangest places I've been to. Huge, smelly, and now completely desolate, Salton Sea used to be one of the top weekend vacation spots for Californians. Abandoned stores, towns, and cars can be found scattered all around the lake. Road trip planner: If you plan on taking a Salton Sea road trip, here are some interesting places nearby... Bombay Beach- Free to enter, nice view, interesting town in front. Salvation Mountain- Incredible man-made "mountain" painted in bible verses and words praising God.
