दूसरा विश्वयुद्ध खत्म हो चुका था. कई महाशक्तियां अब कमजोर हो चुकी थी. वहीं दूसरी ओर भारत में महात्मा गांधी के अनशन और आंदोलन असर दिखा रहा था. तत्कालीन प्रधानमंत्री एटली ने फैसला कर लिया था कि जून 1948 तक अंग्रेज भारत छोड़ देंगे. इसी फैसले को लागू करने के लिए भारत के आखिरी वारसराय लॉर्ड माउंटबेटन को भारत भेजने का फैसला किया गया. उन्होंने 133 छोटे-बड़े नेताओं से बातचीत की, लेकिन अब माउंटबेटन ने उन लोगों का चयन कर लिया था, जिनके हाथों वह इस देश को छोड़कर जाना चाहते थे. इऩमें महात्मा गांधी, जिन्ना और नेहरू का नाम था. मुलाकात में नेहरू ने साफ कर दिया था कि वे किसी भी हाल में भारत के हिस्से नहीं होने देना चाहते हैं. गांधी न तो नेहरू के पक्ष में बोले और न ही जिन्ना का विरोध किया. वे बस शांतिपूर्वक देश की आजादी चाहते थे. ठीक तीन दिन बाद उन्होंने जिन्ना से मुलाकात की. इस मुलाकात से साफ हो चुका था कि जिन्ना हर हाल में देश का बंटवारा चाहते हैं. सभी पक्षों के साथ बातचीत कर आखिर में बंटवारे की अत्रीख तय की गयी 15 अगस्त 1947.
