I’m going to share the history, along with some of my own personal history on what has been viewed as the U.S. Navy’s Worst Peacetime Disaster with respect to loss of ships. This disaster did not happen in some faraway location in the Pacific Ocean, but right off the Central Coast of California along a stretch of coastline that’s now part of the Vandenberg Space Force Base. Known as the Point Honda Naval Disaster, On September 8, 1923, 13 million dollars' worth of U.S. Navy ships were destroyed and 23 sailors lost their lives in less than 10 minutes. I was fortune to meet two living survivors at the 75th anniversary and became friends with one, Gene Bruce who served aboard the USS Chauncey, I dedicated this video in his memory.
