In 2015, NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries’ Maritime Heritage Program and West Coast Regional Office, in partnership with the U.S. Naval History and Heritage Command, returned to the shipwreck site of the USS CONESTOGA. The expedition science team was honored to meet with distinguished U.S. Navy Vice Admiral Nora Tyson, first woman fleet commander in U.S. Navy history, and Rear Admiral Markam Rich. In modern times, USS CONESTOGA would have been under her command as Fleet Commander.. USS CONESTOGA lies in the waters of Greater Farallones National Marine Sanctuary, which along with the U.S. Navy’s Sunken Military Craft Act, provides Federal protection for this military grave site of the brave 56 crewmen lost March 25, 1921.
