The 11,616grt passenger cargo liner Heian Maru was launched in 1930 and requisitioned by the Japanese Navy in 1941 for use as a Sixth Fleet submarine tender. She was attacked during U.S. Task Force 58 Operation Hailstone by dive and torpedo bombers and sunk on 18 February 1944. She now rests in 35 metres of water on her port side in the lagoon.
