Rod Macdonald's video: Diving the wreck of the SS Shuna Sound of Mull Scotland

@Diving the wreck of the SS Shuna, Sound of Mull, Scotland
The small cargo steamer SS Shuna was built in 1909 in Holland and registered on the Clyde. In May 1913, the Shuna set off on a voyage from Glasgow to Gothenburg, Sweden, her holds filled with a cargo of coal. After sailing down the Clyde estuary, the Shuna turned to head north up the west coast of Scotland - but as she passed Oban she ran into a storm that reduced visibility. As she tried to enter the narrow stretch of water between the Isle of Mull and mainland Scotland, called the Sound of Mull, in poor visibility, she ran onto the Grey Rocks and was holed. The captain of the stricken steamer headed for the port of Tobermory at the north end of the Sound, but as she threatened to sink, she was run aground on a small beach on the mainland side of the Sound. Although her bows were aground, her stern projected over deeper water - and continued to settle lower into the water. The next morning, so much water had entered her, that the stern sank - dragging the bow off the beach. The wreck slid down the underwater slope - before coming to rest on an even keel in about 30 metres of water. The Shuna was soon forgotten about - and lay undisturbed for some 80 years until her wreck was accidentally discovered by a clam diver in the early 1990's. She is now one of Scotland's most loved shipwrecks.
