"First" é o primeiro álbum-solo de David Gates, após a extinção da banda Bread. Deste disco, lançado em 1973, além de Larry Knechtel e Mike Botts, respectivamente tecladista/baixista e baterista do Bread, participam os seguintes músicos: Jimmy Getzoff, Jim Gordon, Jim Horn, John Guerin, Larry Carlton, Louie Shelton e Russ Kunkel. Todas as músicas foram compostas por David Gates. Deste álbum, destaco a "Suite: Clouds, Rain" de onde saiu a canção "Clouds", de duração mais comercial, muito bonita. Pontos também para "Ann" e "Lorilee", canção onde Mr. Gates deixa fluir um ritmo diferente ao de suas canções, cercado que estava dos ótimos músicos já citados. O brilhante compositor, músico e cantor principal da extinta banda, é o autor de maravilhosas e inesquecíveis baladas do início dos anos 70, como é o caso de "If", "Everything I Own", "Aubrey", "Baby I´m-A Want You", "Make It With You", "The Guitar Man", entre outras.
