@Sunday School in 7minutes FREE BECAUSE OF THE LORD Deut. 8 ISSL 3 27 MSSL 4.3
International Sunday School Lesson - Sunday School in 7minutes Deuteronomy is the fifth book of the JEWISH Torah, and the Christian Old Testament. The book is a series of sermons delivered to the Israelites by Moses on the plains of Moab, shortly before they enter the Promised Land. Remember this is a 40 year journey. Moses is speaking to a new generation of Israel. Reminding them of the covenant b/w God & the Jewish people. Moses directs them to be more loyal to the covenant than the generation before them. Moses tells them, "Make sure that you obey the Word, because that's going to be your secret to life and survival." He uses their 40-year history in the wilderness to teach them relevant lessons for their survival. I often used an Am. Indian proverb that says good judgment comes from experience, experience comes from poor judgement. I add thank God for his saving grace. As MC we must continuously seek the lessons learned from our past to guide our future. Moses is saying do not make the mistakes you ancestors made. The forty years in the wilderness was a punishment for unbelief. But For this generation, the wilderness years were a test to show what was in their hearts - whether they would stay true to the Lord. The true nature of any relationships, even our relationship with God, is revealed during tough times. Some are shown to be strong, others shallow. Israel will be tempted, and testes. It is easy to arrogantly declare that: • I am the captain of my ship • I am the master of my fate during good time. God humbles Israel so that they would know the falsity of these words. Moses remines the people, When you were desperately hungry, God miraculously provided manna. They didn't know what it was. It certainly wasn't the provision they were expecting. God's provision is not always given in the manner with which we expect. Moses is told Israel that your ancestors my not have taught you this but while You may exist by material things alone, but you will not live. True living is based on your relationship with God Through his word. Bread may sustain you, but it is when you believed God’s Word that you live; find • Spiritual growth of • comfort and peace in daily walk • grow in grace, we cannot do any of these on our own Moses tells the Jewish people and MC that just as important as provisions from God is prevention from God. The Israelites had to wonder, "What are we going to do for clothes? I don't have enough to last for forty years in the desert!" Instead of miraculously providing changes of clothing, the Lord simply made their clothes indestructible. Their clothing didn't wear out. Finding clothes can be rationalized, but you cannot explain natural fiber that do not wear out expect by the hand of God. The bible refers to us as the children of God, not as adults or even adolescent. B/c we are his children his discipline comes in the form of God's Word - aimed directly at our hearts. Or we experience discipline in the form of difficult and humbling circumstances, the purpose of discipline is growth. Discipline teaches us or refocuses us on how powerless we are over the things that really matter to us. Moses tells them to stay obedient to the Lord. This is a time when survival cannot be taken for granted no Food Lions or Publix. But, They are entering a land that will provide for their needs • Water • Grain • Wine • Sweet crops • Oil and honey Moses warns Israel and MC of the danger when things go too well - we get too comfortable. Like swine at a trough we forget to look up at the han d feeding us • we forget the lord • we rationalized that our fortune is from our own hands • we conclude that we do not need the lord for we can provide • we surmise that we do not need the Lord’s restrictive laws the is a Ghanaian Proverb that says the ruin of a nation begins in the homes of it people. And it begins with the forsaking of God.
