Union forces won a vital victory here on these fields—they gained control of the Mississippi River, divided the Confederacy across Tennessee and Georgia, and block­aded major ports. But victory cost over 23,000 lives. From December 31, 1862 through January 2, 1863, General Braxton Bragg’s 35,000 troops fought it out with the 42,000-strong Union force commanded by Major General William Rosecrans. Rosecrans claimed victory. The tall granite monument, topped with a bronzed eagle, sits at the center of the National Cemetery and is dedicated to the officers and enlisted men of the United States Regular Army Regiments who died in battle.
