The Huguenots of Bayonne, France settled this peninsula at the southern tip. At some point in the twentieth century, the American military extended the land into the New York City harbor to make a port. Today those portlands are only used by cargo and cruise ships. Looking east across the harbor are the skylines of Manhattan and Brooklyn, and to the south, the Verrazzano Narrows Bridge marks the opening onto the Atlantic Ocean. @ 0.38 seconds, see the 100-foot tall square bronze monument. Though not clearly visible, there is a nickel-plated teardrop hanging right in the middle where the monument has been ripped open. The monument, "To the Struggle Against World Terrorism," is the work of Moscow-based sculptor, Zurab Tsereteli. It arrived in the US as a gift from Russia. When the mayor of Jersey City turned it down, this mostly private man-made pier in Bayonne became its home. Foreign Policy magazine calls it one of the world's ugliest statues.
