The triple cable car in the distance links the spa town of Matlock Bath with the Heights of Abraham. It's been there since 1984. But it was in the nineteenth century that Matlock Bath enjoyed its heyday—when over twenty hydrotherapy spas were built along the steep banks of the town with its natural thermal springs. Today, the spas are closed down, but there are plenty of fish and chips shops and pubs along the River Derwent, and beautiful pathways up the cliffs and into open fields.
