In his long career as a Swedish diplomat, Michael Sahlin served as Ambassador to Türkiye and Azerbaijan (1995–⁠98), the former Yugoslavia/Macedonia (2000–⁠2002), Norway (2007–⁠2010) and as European Union Special Representative in FYR Macedonia (2004–⁠2005). Additionally, he served as State Secretary in the Swedish Ministry of Defence (1991–⁠94) and was Director General of the Folke Bernadotte Academy (2002–⁠2007).
