ROB THORNE et al: Whakariterite A dramatic improvised entrance to the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts marked the beginning of ‘Te Ao Hou | This New World’, a concert presented at the 2019 Adam Chamber Music Festical by taonga puoro exponent Rob Thorne Toi Puoro and the New Zealand String Quartett. The title of this opening work reflects the poem by Vincent Ieni Olsen-Reeder for which the concert is named and the ceremonial qualities of the entrance - ‘Whakariterite’ means to make a way and prepare with prayer, to negotiate a path forward. The work is a co-composition of Rob Thorne, the New Zealand String Quartet and Dr Vincent Olsen-Reeder.
