SOUNZ Centre for NZ Music's video: BEN HOADLEY: Cave Dances

@BEN HOADLEY: Cave Dances
BEN HOADLEY: Cave Dances In Ben Hoadley’s ‘Cave Dances’ we are transported to the roaring ‘20s and the balls that were regularly held in a giant cave on the remote northern tip of the Manukau Harbour. Ben writes, “Guests arrived on horseback and by ferry to Whatipū Lodge, and then walked in their finery for more than a kilometre through the rugged coastal terrain to reach the cave, named Te Ana Ru, to dance well into the early morning to music played mostly on accordions. The dances remained wildly popular for many decades, a history that sits uncomfortably now when one considers that the area is of huge spiritual and ecological significance.” The work was commissioned by the Chamber Music New Zealand Trust and performed on tour - as in this Resound film from the Auckland Town Hall - by members of the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra: Jonathan Cohen (clarinet), Josh Rogan (trumpet), Ingrid Hagan (bassoon), Andrew Beer (violin), Chen Cao (cello) and Sarah Watkins (piano). Audio recorded by RNZ Concert.
