SOUNZ Centre for NZ Music's video: CHRIS GENDALL: Sumi

@CHRIS GENDALL: Sumi
CHRIS GENDALL: Sumi A second work from this Dylan Lardelli-curated series of compositions to take inspiration from a traditional work from the Japanese musical canon is Chris Gendall’s ‘Sumi’. In this Resound film, recorded in Tokyo and edited at SOUNZ, we first hear ‘Banshikicho no choshi’, performed by Mayumi Miyata (sho). This is followed by Chris’s ‘Sumi’, in which Mayumi is joined by Tosiya Suzuki (tenor recorder). The work, “creates shapes from fragments or splashes of sound – reimagining the rich continuity from its inspiration as fragments or brushstrokes.” Supported by the New Zealand Japan Exchange Programme, with film editing funded by NZ On Air.
