SALINA FISHER Tōrino – echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne Commissioned in 2016 by Chamber Music New Zealand for performance by the New Zealand String Quartet, Salina Fisher’s ‘Tōrino: echoes on pūtōrino improvisations by Rob Thorne Toi Puoro’ is based on the pūtōrino playing of the eponymous musician, specifically the improvisation seen in this film: https://bit.ly/2bJTafS. Salina writes that her discovery of Rob’s practice provided for, “the most deeply moving listening experience in my recent memory”. The work was developed through transcription of the source material and an understanding of the pūtōrino specifically and the mahi of taonga puoro more widely, built up via improvisations between the collaborators (with the composer on the violin). ‘Tōrino’ would go on to win the 2017 SOUNZ Contemporary Award and is the subject of today’s Resound film from the 2019 Adam Chamber Music Festival’s “Te Ao Hou | This New World” concert at the Nelson Centre of Musical Arts.
