SOUNZ Centre for NZ Music's video: PHILIP NORMAN: The Pleasure Garden

@PHILIP NORMAN: The Pleasure Garden
PHILIP NORMAN: The Pleasure Garden The purchase, in 1948, of Frances Hodgkins’ painting ‘Pleasure Garden’ by the Christchurch Society of Arts caused an uproar between disciples of modernism and adherents of conservatism in art. The purchase was initially rejected but this was later reversed, for reasons less related to taste or artistic merit and more to do with provincialism. The story is told in the form of a comic cantata by composer Philip Norman and librettist A.K. Grant in this performance from Christchurch’s The Piano in September 2020. The Jubilate Singers and soloists from The Opera Club were backed by top Christchurch instrumentalists, with the composer conducting. Audio recorded by Thom O’Connor. Film funded by NZ On Air.
