2020 SOUNZ Contemporary | Te Tohu Auaha finalist Michael Norris Michael Norris’s ‘Mātauranga (Rerenga)’ is a stunning confluence of the worlds of taonga puoro and Western orchestra, a swirling soundscape evoking the wonder and tragedy of the meeting of tangata whenua and Captain Cook. A commission of the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra to mark Tuia 250, the taonga puoro part was played by Alistair Fraser, whose sounds were captured and manipulated live by the composer.
