The spread was started on the Honeyhole forums back in 2008 as a means to infect the users with the knowledge of the Madman. Owners of the forum, Benny and Gavin Dawson shut the forum down after repeated accounts joined in and made it nearly impossible to use the forum without seeing posts about dreams and The Madman. Stories spread, legends of the Madman of Re, legends of vanishing towns, people, etc. Most of the userbase ended up going mad or leaving the site. Benny decided to investigate further and followed the initial posts that Aidan had found, leading him to places like the Woods, the Bus, and the Dander House. The catch here is, he didn't go missing.
