SOUTHEND AVIATION's video: Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR2 XV232 Engine Run 18 02 2022

Hello and welcome to SOUTHEND AVIATION! Coventry Airport if home to XV232, an ex RAF Hawker Siddeley Nimrod MR2 which is kept in running condition. The trust, Nimrod Preservation Group XV232, have done outstanding work in keeping this cold war jet alive. They perform engine run events most months of the year with tickets starting from just £10! For this event I also did the guided tour for an extra £5, a full guided tour video will be out in the coming days. Nimrods are fitted with 4 Rolls-Royce Spey MK.250 engines, a popular low bypass turbofan engine for it's day. The Spey's are known for being proper screamers when it comes to aircraft engines. You may notice that the Spey's appear quieter once they reach full throttle. This is because the high frequencies go past human hearing so they appear quieter than idle power. The engine runs consist of all 4 engine idling and intended to have all 4 reach full power. Sadly though 2 engines are showing their age and will not budge past idle. XV232 set a distance record during the Falklands War in 1982, performing a reconnaissance flight stretching over 8,400 miles! This flight took a total 18 hours and 40 minutes to complete. This flight time would not have been made possible without the help of in flight refuelling from Victor Tankers. Interestingly the refuelling probe on the Nimrods were taken off of Vulcans, so you could say the Nimrod does have a bit of Vulcan in her.
