The battle of Marathon was one of the many battles of the Greco Persian wars. Greece and Persia were the super powers of antiquity and it was a fight between the west and the east. Marathon and Thermopylae and the Persian invasion in general were the spark that made the various Greek states realize the sense of being one and later on, Philip II the king of the Greek kingdom of Macedonia united all Greek states into one. His son Alexander the Great avenged the Persian empire for its prior invasion to Greece and exported the Greek culture throughout the whole ancient world, thus inaugurating the Hellenistic period.
