Lapis Lignum's video: Rusty painted vintage bolo machete restoration

@Rusty painted vintage bolo machete restoration
I've had this machete since I was a kid, time for a restoration/makeover! Originally it had plastic handle scales held on with traditional electrical tape which went missing after I took them off many years ago to make a new handle for it. I'm not sure where it came from, probably a military surplus store or similar. The plan was to polish the blade but after spending 5 minutes sanding the paint off I decided to give it an engine turned finish to hide the corrosion a bit instead. This is my first attempt at a hidden tang handle, one handle scale had a saw burn mark which wouldn't sand out so I burnt the rest of that scale to match. Handle material is River Red Gum. 0:00 the blade 0:13 Sanding the paint off the blade 0:35 cleaning up the edges of the blade 0:58 mounting the blade to the backing block 1:06 making a drill mounted sanding pad 1:35 engine turning the blade 3:05 blade finish pattern in sunlight 3:14 cutting redgum for handle scales 3:38 marking out handle shape 3:50 trimming handle scale to length 4:02 drilling holes in scales for pins 4:25 cutting handle pins to length 5:57 marking tang outline 5:17 measuring thicknesses to determine plunge depth 5:28 milling tang recess 6:16 chiseling out tang recess 7:17 trimming/drilling scales to shape 8:21 sanding handle scales to shape 9:02 chamfering handle scale edges on router table 9:18 finish sanding handle scales 9:28 scorching handle scale with blowtorch 9:54 masking off for glue 10:10 filing choil into blade 10:29 mixing epoxy and glue up 10:48 removing clamps and masking tape 11:01 masking handle near protruding handle pins 11:11 trimming handle pins 11:21 sanding handle pins flush with handle scale 11:30 applying boiled linseed oil to handle 11:50 trimming epoxy squeeze-out 11:58 sharpening and compulsory arm hair shaving 12:26 detailed view of each side of blade and handle 12:43 the end
