Il 4 Luglio 1947, in una località desertica nei pressi di Roswell (New Mexico), si schiantò al suolo un misterioso oggetto volante. Versione ufficiale: un pallone sonda di provenienza ignota. Il maggiore in pensione Jesse Marcel, uno dei primi ad accorrere sul luogo del disastro, sta concludendo una personale inchiesta per dimostrare che 30 anni prima il governo americano ed i suoi servizi segreti avevano insabbiato la verità: era un UFO (Unidentified Flying Object) che aveva a bordo da due a quattro esseri viventi intelligenti extraterrestri, morti nello schianto.
