Basel (260 m ü. M.) ist die drittgrösste Stadt der Schweiz und liegt im Dreiländereck, wo die Schweiz auf Frankreich und Deutschland trifft. Fünf Rheinbrücken verbinden die beiden Stadtteile Gross- und Kleinbasel. Auf dem Stadtgebiet macht der Fluss eine rechtwinklige Kurve und strömt in die Oberrheinische Tiefebene. Der Wirtschaftsstandort Basel ist weltweit bekannt wegen der hier ansässigen Pharmakonzerne. Die Stadt rühmt sich auch als Kulturzentrum Europas mit zahlreichen Museen, Theater und der Kunstmesse «Art Basel». Die Altstadt Grossbasel entspricht dem Gebiet, das von der ersten Stadtmauer umschlossen wurde. Heute wird es umringt vom Quartier Vorstädte. Die historischen Bauten konnten grösstenteils gut erhalten werden und bieten Raum für Dienstleistungsgewerbe und zum Wohnen. Fast täglich findet auf dem Marktplatz vor dem Rathaus ein Lebensmittelmarkt statt. Auf diesem zentralen Platz traf sich schon im Mittelalter die Basler Bürgerschaft um ihre Geschäfte abzuwickeln. ========= Basel (260 m above sea level) is the third largest city in Switzerland and is located in the tri-border region where Switzerland meets France and Germany. Five bridges over the Rhine connect the two city districts of Grossbasel and Kleinbasel. The river makes a turn at right angles in the city area and flows into the Upper Rhine Valley. Basel is globally known as a scientific venue due to the pharmaceutical companies based here. The city also prides itself in being a European cultural center with numerous museums, theaters, and the «Art Basel» art fair. The historic city center of Grossbasel corresponds to the area that was enclosed by the first city walls. Nowadays, it is surrounded by the Vorstädte quarter. It was possible to preserve most of the historic buildings, which now offer room for the services sector and as residences. A grocery market is held in the market square in front of the city hall on an almost daily basis. Even back in the Middle Ages, the citizens of Basel would meet in this central square to attend to business matters.
