Gürcistan ile Rusya arasında 2008 yılında 5 gün süren bir savaş çıkmıştı. Savaşın nedeni, özerk Abhazya ve Güney Osetya bölgelerinin Gürcistan'dan tek taraflı olarak bağımsızlıklarını ilan etmeleriydi. Rusya, Gürcistan'ın ayrılıkçı bölgelerini birçok Batılı ülkenin aksine bağımsız devletler olarak tanımıştı. O zamandan beri Rusya ile Gürcistan arasındaki diplomatik ilişki yok. Gürcistan ise AB ve NATO'ya üye olmayı hedefliyor.
