Gautama, the Buddha got sick after eating a food that had been poisoned. He knew that the food was bad and would make his followers sick too. He told the person who gave him the food that he appreciated their kindness, but they shouldn't give it to anyone else. He couldn't sit up or talk, so he had to lie down and support his head to speak. This pose became very important to Buddhists and they started imitating it. But it's not enough to just copy the pose, you can't become a Buddha just by doing that. When the Buddha, a wise and peaceful person, passed away, many pictures were made to remember him. In these pictures, he looks calm and happy, lying on his side with his head resting on his hand. People believe that the Buddha lived from 566 to 486 BC. It is not clear how he died, but some say he ate poisoned meat, specifically pork. This caused him to get very sick and pass away from a disease called pig-bel, which is caused by harmful bacteria. There was a blacksmith named Chunda who lived in a place called Pava. He heard that Buddha was coming to visit and wanted to give him some food. Chunda asked Buddha if he could give him some food and Buddha agreed. Chunda gave him a sweet dish called sukara maddava. Some people argue whether it was made of pork or mushrooms gathered with the help of pigs. Whatever it was made of, Buddha ate it and got very sick. He asked his friend Ananda to bury the rest of the dish in the ground. Chunda felt really bad and worried it was his fault, but Buddha told him it wasn't his fault and made him feel better.
