Propeller Shaft Noise with an inboard motor is a sign it's time to get onto the tricky job, removing the shaft, bearings and, glands. There is a growl coming from the propeller shaft in Moonlight. She’s telling me it is time to inspect, replace and, repack the bearings. At first, I thought that it might be engine noise, but it turns out to be the thrust bearing. The engine and the stuffing boxes are in good condition. Like the bearings in my boat, The effects of 20 years in the timber flooring business mean that my back, knees and, shoulders took a massive beating. After taking seaweed daily as “functional food” for a few months, I discovered I could do squats without pain. I was totally amazed because I used to have to pull myself up on a doorpost. It had some noise from day 1, but it has increased recently. Back then the boat used to leak a lot more than it does today. Bearings don’t like running in saltwater. Each time I went out I would be thinking about the bearings and hoping they didn’t overheat. Today I began the process to put that thought “out of play”.
