Our wooden sailboat catches fire in the middle of Hervey Bay. We saved the boat and my foot healed over time leaving a permanent scar. Here is some new footage and the full story of what happened when our boat nearly went up in flames. The atmosphere is electrified and your reactions are acute when sailing an open dinghy full of all your paraphernalia across the bay in a stiff breeze and a steep chop. Like the bearings in my boat, The effects of 20 years in the timber flooring business mean that my back, knees and, shoulders took a massive beating. After taking seaweed daily as “functional food” for a few months, I discovered I could do squats without pain. I was totally amazed because I used to have to pull myself up on a doorpost. The gentle breeze billowing across River Heads at the mouth of the Mary river summoned our three small craft out onto Hervey Bay. The wind that had been helping us find our way out into the heart of the bay eventually dropped out entirely, so we decided to kill the engine, and pause for a while on the vitreous sea. It seemed like a perfect time to brew up a fresh coffee while waiting for the others to catch up with us as they were now motoring with their tiny outboards. Sometimes unexpected things can happen when you are lulled into a false sense of security. A sequence of stacked events jolting you back to sharp reality in an instant. This day on the water was one of those moments, prompting swift and critical action. Moonlight was on-fire far from shore in the middle of the Great Sandy Strait! When the waves hit us I was unprepared. I had foolishly set the Trangia up on the thwart, and beside it, I had placed a 20-liter water jug. The resulting shock-wave rocked the boat violently enough to make the jerrycan slide off the thwart, and it struck me in the left shoulder, and in so doing it put me off balance so I couldn’t steady the stove. The stove, in turn, crashed onto the bottom-boards, landing in a bleve of vapourised spirits that filled the inside of the boat. Two blasts with the extinguisher were all it took to put the fire out, and in so doing I coated every inch boat with sticky white powder. The boys coming up from behind us were now aware that something was not quite right as they witnessed the two white plumes of mist that resulted from the extinguisher being set off. The Stove went over the side in the melee, and now I had time to pay attention to my foot that was by now shedding layers of skin off the right side. There is a dark and vaguely triangular, token on the side of my right foot. Sometimes it itches a little provoking a scratch and evoking recollections of what happened far out from shore in Hervey bay, alone in our little 12 ft clinker dinghy.
