Many might say “theocracy”. It was the ancient Jewish historian Josephus who first coined the word “theocracy”. He coined the word theocracy to express the unique model of government as taught in the Holy Bible. However, by the word “theocracy”, Josephus did not mean a religious society or a society ruled by religious scriptures as many understand now. All ancient governments were religious governments. However, Josephus defined “theocracy” as a form of government where only God possessed “all sovereignty and authority” and thus making all the citizens in a country equal. Neither a human being nor a group of people had dominion and lordship over other human beings. The logical outworking of Josephus’ “theocracy” is modern republic. Modern republican thinkers such as John Milton, Algernon Sidney, John Locke understood this. They generally used the terms republic or Hebrew republic to express the same idea which was cited by Josephus. Professor Fania Oz-Salzberger, Professor Emerita of history at the University of Haifa School of Law and the Haifa Center for German and European Studies (HCGES), in her paper “The Jewish Roots of Western Freedom” writes about the modern republican thinkers: “These thinkers all repeat, with individual variations, the same basic theme: The people of Israel had a republic, a nearly perfect republic, from the time of the Exodus until at least the coronation of Saul Despite its transcendent origin, this republic was the product of a historical, political society. And precisely because of its transcendent origin, it was an exemplary state of law and a society dedicated to social justice and republican liberty. When at times these authors follow Josephus in using the term “theocracy” to describe early Israel, the term signifies for them a legal and political system involving citizen participation and civic freedom, uniquely blessed in having been founded by divine imperative in accordance with natural law.” Many modern republican thinkers proposed republican form of government because they were convinced that it is the form of government which is pleasing to God of the Holy Bible. They arrived at that conclusion after the deep meditation of Biblical passages. In this video, Jerry Thomas takes some of those passages and shows how the modern republican thinkers understood those passages. This video also cites how Muhammad of Islam took the same passages and twisted it in the Quran to defend his authoritarian regime. By twisting the Holy Bible and presenting the corrupted form in the Quran, Muhammad enslaved generations of Muslims after him often resulting in terrorist regimes such as Taliban. This episode also briefly discusses the connection that Hindutva government and ancient sin of desiring a human king.
