Non tutti sanno che fu anche un fotografo professionista, per 5 anni dal 1945 al 1950. All'età di tredici anni riceve in regalo da parte del padre una macchina fotografica. Fin da bambino rimane affascinato dalla tecnica fotografica e nel 1945 la sua carriera parte con una straordinaria foto di un edicolante rattristato della notizia della morte del presidente Roosevelt che gli varrà, a soli 17 anni, l'assunzione da parte di "Look Magazine", una fra le più importanti riviste U.S.A. per la quale documenterà la vita quotidiana nell'America dell'immediato dopoguerra o attraverso le storie di celebri personaggi come Rocky Graziano ed un giovane Montgomery Clift, inquadrature contraddittorie di una New York in corsa per diventare la nuova capitale mondiale. A scuola, però, si sente vittima dei soprusi di insegnanti oltremodo conformisti e bigotti che favoriscono chiaramente gli alunni provenienti da origini altoborghesi, negli stessi anni segue studi artistici di fotografia (che gli rallenteranno il percorso scolastico) e comincia ad appassionarsi alla poesia simbolistica e alla filosofia, che lo porterà in breve a conoscere il pensiero del filosofo Nietzsche. A 19 anni trascorre cinque sere a settimana nella sala di proiezione del Museum of Modern Art di New York a guardare vecchi film e dopo quattro anni di studio all'accademia di arte cinematografica pagati grazie allo stipendio da giornalista locale, decide di dedicarsi attivamente al cinema. - (English version) Stanley Kubrick (New York, 26 luglio 1928 -- Harpenden, 7 marzo 1999) is best known for his directing credits — Lolita, Dr. Strangelove, 2001: A Space Odyssey, A Clockwork Orange, etc. — but it was his early ability with the camera that originally propelled him into the art of capturing images. His talent was immense even at 17. In 1945, he sold a photograph of a sad news vendor reacting to the death of President Franklin D. Roosevelt to Look magazine for $25, and a couple months later became the youngest photographer ever hired by the magazine. Kubrick's career as a photojournalist gives us another look into the man who directed some of the greatest movies ever put onto film. A keen eye for light and shadow drape his subjects under a veil that is strictly characteristic of Kubrick and his control over the camera. His pictures are rife with an air of wonderment. Loser vs victor. Circus freaks, and paper boys. Organized chaos. The poses and situations of the subjects he captured, speak of a New York filled with the eclecticism it has spent decades parading and perfecting. 25 photos were hand selected out of 10,000 negatives for the currently running show at The Museum of the City in New York.
