That is why the same date was chosen.” It is known that EPS was handpicked by Sasikala in 2016 at Koovathur after OPS revolted soon after the demise of Jayalalithaa. In twists and turns that followed, Sasikala was sent to prison and OPS joined hands with EPS. Despite differences, EPS and OPS have now come together to fight the upcoming assembly elections. “Both of them know that it is important to stay united. They have to safeguard the party. Today signatures of OPS and EPS needed for finalising the candidates. So, there will be power centres for these two. They can’t afford to lose it. They will stay united and surely not accept Sasikala back," said political analyst Raveendran Duraisamy. EPS had said, “There is no chance of uniting with Sasikala. There is no difference of opinion on that matter." The doubts had raised after RSS idealogue and Thuglaq Editor S Gurumurthi had commented recently, “If your house is on fire. You can't wait for Ganges water to put it out but can manage with sewer water." He had made an indirect reference to Sasikala being accepted back into AIADMK to fight against DMK. This had made quite an uproar and Gurumurthi immediately stated that his statement was misconstrued by the media. Nevertheless, there have been conflicting signals from some AIADMK leaders. Soon, after DMK youth Scion Udhayanidhi Stalin made derogatory comments about Sasikala, support poured in for the friend and close aide of Jayalalithaa. Former AIADMK Minister Gokula Indira said, “She ( Sasikala ) had lived a life of penance along with Jayalalithaa. Such derogatory speech about her cannot be tolerated. “ This had not gone down well with senior AIADMK leaders. A few days later, she said, “ I only meant that Sasikala was an aide of amma. And Amma led a life of austerity." For now, Gokula Indira could have retracted her statement, but sources in the AIADMK say that many disgruntled leaders like Karunas, Thaniarasu could join hands with “ Chinnamma” ( Sasikala ) Sources added that the leaders who were not given importance in the present AIADMK might join AMMK launched by Sasikala’s nephew TTV Dhinakaran. “ AIADMK is indeed scared of Sasikala. They are worried a large number of party functionaries might line up to welcome Sasikala after her release.
