SaveONWildlife's video: Woman Saves Turtles Along Busy Highway

@Woman Saves Turtles Along Busy Highway
If you've been out on the roads, you may have seen an increase in traffic. Not car traffic, turtle traffic. With the warmer weather, many are moving toward water. Step by step, Amber Slaughterbeck walks along US 150, looking for slow moving creatures. Her and her friends are out here two hours every day. "I had no idea it was going to be this big of a task," said Amber. It started almost two years ago when she was driving to school at Saint Mary of the Woods. Seeing one dead turtle after another, she felt compelled to do something. "I was just like, 'alright, that's it, i can't take this anymore,'" said Amber, "I had no idea that i was going to save as many as me and my other friends have saved." You won't believe how many they have saved, 1300! The turtles migrate from one side of Wabashiki to the other, but unfortunately in the middle lies US 150. That's where Amber and her friends come in; picking up the turtles and bringing them to the other side. "We are basically their crossing guard. we help them across the road,' said Amber. A pathway filled with traffic. It's a shorter migration than most animals face, but one that must be made to get to more water. And for Amber, it's a task she's happy to help with. "Each turtle makes me feel good," said Amber, "so seeing fewer and fewer of them out there makes me feel pretty good." Turtle migration goes from April to October. Amber and her friends are always looking for more people to help. if you would like to help, you can contact Amber at aslaughterbeck@smwc.edu
