Science and myths's video: Physics concept vacuum decay

The vacuum decay is one of the possible ways in which the universe might end. When this happens, everything in this universe, I mean everything, will get wiped out clean. Not a single atom will be left. It could totally rewrite all laws of physics we know.This answer is going to be mostly based on concepts on quantum physics. I will explain the concepts in brief and provide footnotes, because I don’t want to drift away from the main point and make this answer too long to read. We first need to understand 2 important principles - Energy level Stability Energy levels - Electrons are the ones that have energy levels. We all know that electrons revolve around the nucleus of the atom. But however, they can’t move in any random directions as they wish. So, these energy levels are fixed paths of electrons from the nucleus of atom. These energy levels are also known as electron shells.The important idea is that everything has an energy level. The higher the level, the more energy there exists, in any given system. For instance, let us take a paper. The atoms in it have a high energy level. If we burn the paper, it releases chemical energy stored in its molecules and turns that energy into heat. Then, what will be left, is ash. Its atoms have lower energy level compared to the wood before. Stability - Everything in our universe tries to move towards its ground state, in which it is completely stable and has as little energy as possible. Let us take an analogy. There is a ball on a hill. It is unstable and has a lot of potential energy. It tries to reach to the bottom. When disturbed, it will roll down into the valley. And loses its potential energy in the process. The ball, is a field. The top part of the hill is the high energy state, the bottom part being the ground state. Just like that, even Quantum Fields want to move to their ground state and stabilize themselves. Now coming to the question. Our universe is governed by something called quantum fields . They too, like all other objects, want to be in a lowest energy level possible. This state is called Vacuum State (note -it has nothing to do with vacuum). The Vacuum State is the 0 of most fields. But there is one field that breaks this rule — The Higgs Field. The lowest energy of this field ain’t zero. Now comes a weird property of this field — It may have more than one minimum value! It appears that the field is NOT yet stable, but is metastable. It pretends to be stable, but isn’t exactly. Now to know more watch out this full video. Thanks for watching..
