I learned this song from a recording of Emmett Murray, recorded on the shores of Lake Okeechobee by Dwight DeVane, the folklorist for the state of Florida, around 1980. Murray had worked in the Turpentine camps, been robbed of his labor, and repaired to truck garden/farm for himself. The song presents a remarkable portrait of the economic and physical risks for Blacks. It drew me into open-C tuning on the guitar (C-G-C-G-C-E low-high). I hope you'll enjoy it.
