At the time of deluge, Lord Shiva and goddess parvati were said to have been sailed on the boat powered by the pranava mantra the ‘om’. They found that all the places had drowned in the water, whereas their boat had docked on a land, which would have been called as seerkali or otherwise Thonipuram. Like that, one more place had also found as not drowned. As that place was seen, as somewhat top in height, it had been termed as Thittai, as the Tamil word for height is 'Thittu’. Out of the 28 sthalas, which are said to have been liked by lord Shiva, 26 sthalas had been drowned, except these two places. Again, during the deluge, the pranava mantra om had continuously heard in sirkali, whereas the ‘hum’ sound accompanied with other mantras were said to have been heard at Thittai.
