Mentre san Pietro si allontanava da Roma per sfuggire alla persecuzione di Nerone, a lui apparve Gesù. Pietro gli disse: «Quo vadis, Domine? Dove vai, Signore?». Gesù gli rispose: «Vado a Roma, per essere crocifisso una seconda volta». Pietro comprese che Gesù sarebbe stato crocifisso nella persona del suo Vicario, cioè Pietro stesso, primo vescovo di Roma. Allora tornò indietro e si consegnò ai suoi persecutori.
