Shawn Bolz shares: Debunking Modern Religious Myths About Christmas: Why WOULDN’T You Celebrate Christmas? Can we just celebrate Christmas without religious guilt or shame? If you get into legalism about comparing traditions to religious practices then you will rob yourself of the building blocks of connections to family, community, and ultimately God. Although holiday traditions are usually the first thing people think of when you mention traditions, they are not the only ones families have. Whether it's visiting a church nativity scene or singing Christmas hymns, decorating your house to be mindful of Jesus and his birth, baking Christmas treats or regularly having Christmas family movie night they are a family ritual that brings children and parents closer. These moments create positive memories for children and provide positive events for everyone to anticipate! Children crave the comfort and security that comes with traditions and predictability. This takes away the anxiety of the unknown and unpredictable. Traditions are a wonderful way to anchor family members to each other, providing a sense of unity and belonging. Spiritually we are in charge of setting a foundation for how we create family traditions, spiritual moments in holidays, and even more : create rhythms of spiritual connection and family connection in traditions. God set a lot of Holidays in the Bible for the Hebrews, and we can learn from these.
