Shawn Gano's video: Turning a Wooden Pepper Mill

How I turn pepper mills on a lathe. (see text instructions below) Here is a photo (with ruler for scale) of the story stick I used in the video: http://www.gano.name/shawn/PepperMill_8in_Storystick.jpg --------------- Peppermill Instructions (thanks to Mike Huber!!) ---------------- • Turn the blank round on one end to form a tennon to fit the 4 jaw check • Mount in the 4 jaw and continue to round blank • Mark the critical points using the story stick • Create the two lower beads • Define the critical points to the dimensions on the story stick with a parting tool • Shape the body with a ½” spindle gouge and the top bead on the lower body • Create the spigot • Create the tennon on the top • Bring the base of the ball to the dimension on the story stick • Shape the top (ball) of the mill with a ½” spindle gouge • Turn the top tennon to a very small diameter ready for parting • Sand the mill – 100, 500, 220, 300, 400, 600, 800, 1,000, 1,500, 2,000 grits • Apply finish – walnut oil and bees wax • Part off the top tennon • Drill the hole through the top and spigot with a 5/16” twist drill • Part off the top at the base of the spigot • Drill the hole for the pepper in the top of the lower body with a 1 1/16” Forstner bit • Clean up the end just parted and add finish • Part off the body from the lower tennon • Change the chuck to one that will hold the ID of the 1 1/16” hole and mount the base at the top of the base • Drill the large chamber – 1 5/8” Forstner ½” deep • Clean up the base, the outer edge should be proud of the centre (dish) • Finish the through hole in the base – 1 1/16“ Forstner • Apply finish to the bottom
