Arguably the best of the Ealing Studios directors Alexander 'Sandy' Mackendrick used his background in drawing to help him think visually and "write with images". In these clips I've assembled here we glimpse some of his production designs and I've tracked down storyboards. He discusses the characterization process he witnessed his star Alec Guinness do by building a character through mannerisms. He relates an anecdote about 'pitching' the story of 'The Man In The White Suit' to a friend to 'test' the ending. At the end Terry Gilliam commends 'The Ladykillers' on being a masterclass in dialogue, movement and character.
