Heno --------------- Who is JPEGMAFIA? What you just heard was experimental hip-hop artist JPEGMafia. His latest album, Veteran is one of the most innovative rap projects to come out of 2018. The hype surrounding him after high praise from critics has propelled his music career from underground internet rapper to acclaimed recording artist, but who is JPEGMAFIA? Barrington Hendricks is the man behind the JPEGMAFIA moniker. He was raised in Brooklyn, New York until he was 13 years old when his mother decided to move to Alabama. In Alabama, Hendricks experienced racism for the first time, which would later appear as a common theme that he would tackle in his music. As a young adult, Hendricks joined the Air Force and served a tour of duty in Iraq. While stationed in Japan, he started making music with a group of artists under the name, Ghostpop. The group started getting attention around Tokyo, and it was during this time when he came up with the name JPEGMAFIA. JPEG was honorably discharged from the military and moved to Baltimore in 2015. He began releasing music under his new moniker with the release of Darkskin Manson and Communist Slow Jams. These early releases were the start of JPEGMAFIA’s musical identity as a controversial and experimental artist. A year later, Peggy released Black Ben Carson and The 2nd Amendment, which solidified him as a prominent voice in Baltimore’s underground hip-hop scene. His latest release, Veteran, is his most impressive album to date. JPEG’s approach to production on this project directly stems from his do it yourself approach to making music. This is seen on several tracks on the album with the use of unusual sampling techniques and raw delivery. Another defining element of Peggy's music is his controversial lyrical content. On tracks like ‘Baby I’m Bleeding’ JPEG isn’t afraid to confront sensitive political topics or call out other celebrities. From his unique approach to production and aggressive social commentary, JPEGMAFIA is a standout voice in the hip-hop community. Starting from humble beginnings releasing music online, he is a shining example of how the internet can transform an artist's career. --------------- DISCLAIMER: We do not own any of the video or music used to create this video.
