@Kanpur Test: Heartbreak for India, NewZealand snatch a thrilling draw
1) A gripping five-day contest at the Green Park Stadium in Kanpur ended in a thrilling draw as New Zealand's last-wicket pair of Rachin Ravindra and Ajaz Patel held off the Indian spinners in the final half hour. "Very good game of cricket, they played really well. We came back really well after the first session. I don't think we could have done anything different. The chat with the umpires was about the light. As a fielding team, you want to bowl more overs, as a batting unit you don't want to bat in that situation. The chat was about the light, but umpires made the call and I thought they were right." Ajinkya Rahane, India skipper 2) Earlier on the penultimate day of the opening Test, India had declared on 234/7, setting NewZealand 284-run target. New Zealand began the day at 4/1 with India needing nine wickets. A few half-chances went begging but the Kiwis approached the match with a clear cut plan to draw the game. Umesh Yadav gave the first breakthrough after Lunch. 3) A wicket-less first session played against India as nightwatchman William Somerville and Tom Latham saw off the first two hours without any loss. "It has been touch and go around this time throughout the game. Terrific game overall. All three results were still at play. We showed a lot of heart to bat through the day. Some fantastic experiences for Rachin, Ajaz and Somerville. It was also nice to have a crowd here to see this game. The two fast bowlers that did play were outstanding. Bowling long overs was an unbelievable effort. We know this Indian side is a very strong one. Experience overall in this game was good to have. " Kane Williamson, NewZealand skipper 4) Latham, who missed out on a century by 5 runs in the first innings, registered another gritty half-century. 5) When R Ashwin dismissed Latham, he overtook Harbhajan Singh's tally of 417 wickets in Tests for India. “These are milestones that are constantly kept on tab, it's wonderful. Ever since Rahul bhai has taken over, he's kept saying that how many ever wickets you take, how many ever runs you make in 10 years time, you won't remember them. It's the memories that matter so I want to have some special memories going forward in the next 3-4 years.” R Ashwin 6) Ravindra Jadeja dismissed Ross Taylor at the stroke of Tea to keep India in the game. 7) Indian bowlers clawed further deep as Axar Patel had Henry Nicholls adjudged LBW. 8) Then after five overs, Jadeja got the all-important wicket of Kane Williamson. 9) In the 79th over, Tom Blundell was bowled around his legs by Ashwin. 10) India took the second new ball in the 84th over as the match reached the endgame. 11) With the light fading and time running out for the hosts, Jadeja struck in quick succession to send back Kyle Jamieson and Tim Southee.
