Signal Hill Productions's video: MEC 354 GP40 w Fouled Horn Cannibalized Door

MEC 354 (EMD GP40) leads the local switcher DO-1 (Pan Am Railways) through Ocean Park, Maine, on a wet afternoon in June. The locomotive wears Pan Am's Phase II paint scheme; however, her "conductor's side" front door is grey with an orange stripe. It's likely that the door was cannibalized from one of the old "Guilford" units on the Waterville Dead Line. MEC 354 was built in 1969 by Electro-Motive Diesel (General Motors). She was built as a leaser (EMDX 22); however, she was picked up by the Penn Central Transportation Company within a few months of her leaving the factory (PC 3270). In 1976 Penn Central was taken over by the Consolidated Rail Corporation. So, too, was our locomotive (CR 3270). She'd spend two decades working for Conrail, before she was acquired by the Maine Central Railroad Company (Guilford Rail System) in 1997. As a GP40, MEC 354 weighs in at 245,000 pounds (111,000 kilograms) and produces up to 3,000 horsepower (2,240 kilowatts); these weight and power numbers yield a starting tractive effort of 62,500 pounds (278 kilonewtons) and a continuous tractive effort of 54,700 pounds (243 kilonewtons) at 11.1 mph (18 km/h).
