@Picaridin Insect Repellent: Repel Tick Defense Review
I just purchased Repel Tick Defense from Walmart in a 6oz pump bottle. This insect repellent uses picaridin as its active ingredient to repel biting insects and bugs. I'd never even heard of this chemical before and did some super-fast research from my phone using Walmart's free wi-fi because my phone gets no reception in Walmart. I quickly searched for answers to what is picaridin and is picaridin safe. The answers I was able to find, even on sites like Reddit where people love to promote ineffective, "earthy" concoctions like essential oils to prevent mosquitos and ticks from biting you (and rarely ever work) had good things to say about picaridin. From what I read, if you compare bug sprays with deet vs bug sprays with picaridin, you may find the ones with picaridin as the active ingredient will outperform deet! And that's exactly what I found out! For me, this spray with picaridin in it worked very well for me in the woods near a lake where mosquitos and ticks are everywhere! And if you're wondering what picaridin smells like, or if it even has a scent, my nose couldn't pick up any scent coming from this bug spray. I can't say the same for deet. Deet stinks! Picaridin doesn't smell like anything to me. The label on the Repel Tick Defense bottle was confusing. It promonently promotes its use for repelling ticks, while making no mention of repelling mosquitos.Ultimately, the reason why I bought this stuff was to repel mosquitoes. I'd never heard of picaridin insect repellent. I'd been using deet to repel mosquitos and other biting insects for my entire life. There are countless threads across the internet questioning the safety of deet, but few responding to is picaridin safe. Deet has been around forever. In fact, deet is not only very effective, but many studies have been conducted and prove deet is safe. While I can't confirm the safety of this picaridin-based insect repellent I just bought from Walmart (for about $6.00 if you're wondering how much it costs), I can tell you I've been thrilled with how well Repel Tick Defense has worked to keep mosquitoes from biting me or even landing on me. From what I have read and learned, how deet vs picaridin work are different. With deet, mosquitoes will likely still land on you, they just aren't going to be very interested in biting you. With picaridin bug spray, you'll have something of an invisible barrier deterring biting insects like mosquitoes and ticks from even landing on you, let alone wanting to bite you. The highest concentration of picaridin in a can or bottle of bug spray I could find is 20%. What I bought and show in this video is 15%. For me, 15% picaridin is extremely effective in repelling bugs. I would imagine the 20% would be outstanding. Deet was developed in 1946 and made commercially available to the public in 1957. Picaridin was first made available to the public in 2005. Here are some links that may help you decide if you agree with me that picaridin is safe and effective. Someone posts on reddit their affinity for picaridin over deet and most of the comments back them up: https://www.reddit.com/r/ScienceBasedParenting/comments/t7lhv3/picaridin_is_better_than_deet/ Repel Tick Defense Pump Spray official website page: https://www.repel.com/products/personal-repellents/other-repellents/tick-defense-pump-spray.aspx Picaridin General Fact Sheet: http://npic.orst.edu/factsheets/PicaridinGen.html EPA page for DEET: https://www.epa.gov/insect-repellents/deet #:~:text=After%20it%20was%20developed%20by,Safety%20review%20of%20DEET Consumer Reports comparing different insect repellents including picaridin and deet: https://www.consumerreports.org/insect-repellent/which-insect-repellent-ingredients-are-most-effective-a9746785695/ Do your own research. But for me, when it comes to buying bug spray that contains a main ingredient of either deet or picaridin, I'm making the switch to picaridin. What's been your experience with insect repellents? Leave a comment to let everyone know!
