The number of people who are gay, lesbian or bisexual in the UK can only be estimated. These estimates are likely to be underestimates, as there are many people who are not ‘out’ and who are not open about their sexual orientation, so if asked, they may not acknowledge that they are lesbian, gay or bisexual. However, the government estimates that between 5% and 7% of the population are lesbian, gay or bisexual - which means that everyone is likely to have lesbian, gay and bisexual colleagues and/or customers. Homophobia is a range of negative attitudes and feelings towards homosexuality and people identified or perceived as being homosexual. People who are homophobic can behave in an inappropriate way toward lesbian, gay and bisexual people without recognising that their behaviour is unwanted and perhaps even unlawful. Lesbian, gay and bisexual people can experience less favourable treatment such as:  being excluded from meetings or social gatherings  not being given responsibility for tasks for which they are qualified  having their opinions discounted  being subjected to inappropriate jokes and remarks  being subjected to violence.
