The main reason why the cost of living is so high in California is housing. Regulations from the '70s and '80s have made it almost impossible to build vertical living, which would be the ideal way to ensure affordable living. Gas, electricity, and just about every other aspect of living in California is more expensive than other states. Diversity is also a major issue in Silicon Valley. Black workers in tech are a statistical oddity, and only 4.7% of the tech working force is Latino. Women make up only 26% of leadership roles even when they are 44% of the workforce.
