Classification of drug molecules of marine organisms: 1. Antimicrobial agent and antibiotics 2. Antiviral compounds 3. Ant parasitic compounds 4. Anticancer agents 5. Anticoagulant agents 6. Cardiovascular and Neurophysiologic agents 7. Anti-inflammatory and Antispasmodic agents. 1. ANTIMICROBIAL AGENT AND ANTIBIOTICS Cephalosporin: It is obtained from the marine fungus, Cephalosporium acrimonies. Istamycins: This is the fermentation product of marine microorganism, Streptomyces lenjimariesis. Thelpin: It is obtained from the Thelepsus setosul (annelida). Eunicin: It is obtained from the Eunicia mammosa (gorgonian corals). It is an Antimicrobial agent. Variabilin: It is obtained from the Iricinia variabilis. It is an antibacterial agent. 2. ANTIVIRAL COMPOUNDS Ara-A: It is obtained from the sponge, Tethya crypta. Avarol and Avarone: It is obtained from the sponge, Disidea avara. 3. ANTIPARASITIC COMPOUNDS Domoic acid: It is obtained from the red algae, chondria armata. It is used as anthelmintic. α-kainic acid: It is obtained from the red algae, digenia simplex. It is used broad spectrum anthelmintic. It is effective against parasitic roundworm, whip worm and tape worm. Laminine: It is obtained from Laminaria angustata. It is use as an anthelmintic as well as smooth muscle relaxant. 4. ANTICANCER AGENTS: Simularin: It is obtained from the Sinularia flexibly. Crassin acetate: It is obtained from the Caribbean Pseudoplexaura porosa. Halitoxin: It is obtained from the helieloma viridis. 5. ANTICOAGULANT AGENTS: Carrageenan: It is obtained from the Chondrus, Euchauma and Gigrtina. It is reported anticoagulant activity. 6. CARDIOVASCULAR AND NEUROPHYSIOLOGICAL AGENTS: Octapamine: It is obtained from the Octopus vulgaris, O. macropus and E moschata. Its gives cardiovascular and adrenergic response Laminine: It is obtained from the Laminaria angustata. It is used as hypertensive agent. 7. ANTI-INFLAMMATORY AND ANTISPASMODIC AGENTS: Manoalide: It is obtained from the Luffariella variables. It is act by direct inactivation of phospholipase A2, which is present in some neurotoxins and also has a role in synthesis of PGs in humans. Also has analgesic and selective anti-inflammatory activity. Tetradoxin: It is obtained from the puffer fishes Spherides rubripes, (liver and ovaries). It is used as strong antispasmodic.
