It is a medical condition characterized by persistently elevated blood pressure levels in the arteries, which can exert excessive force on the vessel walls, posing serious health risks. Hypertension is categorized based on its severity, and these categories help guide treatment decisions and management strategies. 1. Normal Blood Pressure: A blood pressure reading is considered normal when the systolic pressure (the top number) is below 120 mmHg and the diastolic pressure (the bottom number) is below 80 mmHg. Individuals falling into this category are considered to have optimal cardiovascular health and a lower risk of developing hypertension-related complications. 2. Elevated Blood Pressure: This category was introduced by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association in 2017. It includes blood pressure readings with a systolic value between 120-129 mmHg and a diastolic value below 80 mmHg. While not classified as hypertension, individuals in this category have an increased risk of progressing to hypertension and may benefit from lifestyle modifications to prevent further elevation. 3. Hypertension Stage 1: In this stage, the systolic pressure ranges from 130-139 mmHg, or the diastolic pressure ranges from 80-89 mmHg. It indicates mild hypertension and requires careful monitoring and lifestyle changes, such as dietary modifications, increased physical activity, and stress reduction. In some cases, medication may be prescribed if lifestyle interventions alone are insufficient to control blood pressure. 4. Hypertension Stage 2: This stage represents moderate to severe hypertension. Systolic pressure is equal to or greater than 140 mmHg, or diastolic pressure is equal to or greater than 90 mmHg. At this point, the risk of developing cardiovascular complications, such as heart attack, stroke, or kidney damage, significantly increases. Lifestyle changes and antihypertensive medications are often prescribed to manage blood pressure effectively and reduce the risk of complications.
